Pet Ideas For Your Kids (That Aren't Dogs Or Cats)

For some people, living with a pet isn't about constant fulfilment and that all-important bond. In fact, for some people, owning a pet can be a very difficult thing. They cause lots of mess, don't listen to a word you say, and disrupt your life in so many different ways. And this could be just the typical dog or cat. So, when you're looking at introducing a pet into the house because your child has been bugging you for the millionth time, and you finally relented, what pets can
you introduce the household that aren’t dogs or cats?

A Pygmy Marmoset
Also known as a pocket monkey, this are so small that it can cling to your finger. These creatures are very active and need a lot of companionship. So, if you are looking for a way to keep your children occupied, these can certainly do the trick. But it's important to note that their diet is, naturally, it's not akin to the typical pet foods. Their diet consists mainly of resin and gum. But you can purchase biscuits made for finger monkeys. It's also worth noting that, depending on where you live in the United States, it might be illegal for you to have a finger monkey as a pet, and so make sure you do your research first.

A Corn Snake
For lots of parents, the idea of a pet snake is something that can give you nightmares. But, in reality, there are lots of snakes that make perfect first pets for children. A corn snake is relatively low maintenance, but it's always important to remember that you need to feed the snake rats or mice. This can be very upsetting for children, so make sure that you and your children are ok with this.

Rats
Yet another one that can be taken the wrong way. In fact, there are plenty of pet rats that are very intelligent. You can actually train them like they're a dog, and can respond to being called by their name, and are very affectionate. The one downside about this type of pet is that their lifespan isn't very long, usually between 2 and 3 years. And, because of the very close bond your child could form with this pet, their passing may be very upsetting.

Geckos
Lizards are very popular pets, and of the many different types of gecko, the leopard gecko is one of the most popular. Again, as a first pet, because they are so easy to look after, they make a great choice. But, when you progress to larger and more exotic lizards, they become more difficult to look after. When it comes to feeding geckos, they require crickets.

Tarantulas
You either love them, or you hate them. But tarantulas are fantastic pets for kids because they are so easy to care for. And if you love your child enough to get a pet tarantula, even though you can't stand the things, be warned, they can live for up to 20 years!

Pet choices are usually dogs or cats, but if you're going for the exotic animal, it can be a lot to get your head around. But remember, pets are very good for the family, and for your children.
